A New Kind of Project

I am about to start the process of creating my first portfolio project. I am excited to get started, and I will be providing regular updates here! I will be developing a project that will appeal to employers who are looking for an employee in an operations or marketing role. I have several ideas of what skills I would like to convey through this project, and I have a few project ideas as well. Let’s get into it!

Skills:

1) Learning Quickly

2) Creative Vision/Design

3) Identifying Need

4) Branding

5) Media Production

6) Efficient Problem Solving

7) Team Building/Leading

8) Networking

9) Organization/Planning

10) Dedication/Follow-through

Project Ideas:

1) Interview a business owner on their most challenging inconveniences and present/develop viable solutions.

For this project I would be interviewing Felicia Pavlica. She owns a real estate business in Kenosha, Wisconsin. I have often seen her handle situations where paperwork, contracting, or many other things get in the way of a sale going smoothly. I would talk to her about these inconveniences and come up with solutions to help resolve or prevent these things from happening. This project appeals to me because I would be demonstrating a lot of the skills that I want to show. It would be fairly challenging, however, due to the distance.

2) Organize a workshop that includes curriculum on technical subjects.

For this project I would host a community workshop. The workshop would be focused on a subject that is fairly technical. Some ideas would be: how to use Adobe programs, video production, and journalism and publication. This idea appeals to me because I would have an opportunity to demonstrate my ability to organize events, develop curriculum, and implement it as well. This would be challenging because I live in a rural area and many of the attendees of these workshops would likely be children, not adults.

3) Work as someone’s personal assistant for a month.

For this project I would work as a personal assistant for someone. I am unsure of who I would work for specifically. However, this project appeals to me because I think that operations has many similarities with this. I would be able to demonstrate my ability to work efficiently on an array of tasks. However, it may be difficult to find someone who I can really work with. There is also a risk that the tasks I am given won’t reflect the skills that I am going for.

4) Create one or more online courses.

This project would entail me developing online courses on a few subjects. I would aim for creating three courses on topics such as: creating a brand, media production, and maybe even developing online courses. This would give me the opportunity to demonstrate my skills in curriculum development and organizations. This would be difficult because I would need to be extremely productive throughout the process if I want to accomplish all of my goals for this project.

5) Help someone take their business idea and develop a business model that they can actually launch.

For this project I would work with my brother. He has started a business doing lawn work for people. However, I have noticed that developing an actual business model would help him to improve his return from the business. As part of this process I would go through a process like this: Create business model, calculate previous business stats, identify target customers, set future goals, create marketing strategy, prototype branding, pitch to investors, purchase supplies, launch marketing campaign, monitor bookings, calculate progress to goals, ensure customer satisfaction, re-evaluate/optimize branding, watch progress to goals. This would demonstrate many of the skills I am looking to show off, but it would be challenging because we would need to really show how this improved his return.

This is just the initially planning phase. I am exciting to continue posting updates on my project as it progresses in the future! Check back here next week for another update!
