My family has proudly owned four Dalmatians over the course of twenty years. I decided to take today to tell you a little bit about them. Keep reading if you’re interested.
Some history…
Many people have an automatic connotation with fire departments when they refer to Dalmatians. I always wondered what exactly it was that Dalmatians were used for in that line of work. So, naturally, I did some research on it. Here’s what I found…
Emergency Sirens.
Before the technology was available, firemen would bring Dalmatians to the scene of emergencies. As they rushed to the scene, the Dalmatians would bark and warn pedestrians of the situation, and the oncoming fire trucks. They were, essentially, the original fire sirens.
Horses.
The horses that drew the fire trucks along, would often be high strung. The horses were easily scared by mice, and crowds, and so much more. Dalmatians were brought along to scare off smaller animals, and keep the horses calm while the firemen worked.
High Endurance.
Dalmatians were perfectly suited for a job like this, as they have extremely high endurance. Dalmatians are built to run. These dogs can run for hours, at high speeds, without needing a break. Because of this, they were perfect for this type of working condition.
My experience…
I’ve grown up with Dalmatians, my entire life. They are beautiful, and unique, dogs. I have absolutely loved them, and my family has had great experiences with them. They make great family pets, and wonderful companions. I highly recommend them, if you’re looking into getting a dog.
