How I Manage Projects...

I am dedicating this month to working on a portfolio project. If you’re curious, you can read more about that here. In this post, I will be going over some of the strategies that I implement when I am managing a project. I will also go over some of the tools that I use.

Start with a vision…

When I begin a project the first thing that I do is make an outline. I want it to be clear to me what my goals are and what steps I must take to reach those goals. For my project this month, my goal is to take my media brand from YouTube to it’s own online platform.

So, broken down, I want to accomplish the following:

  1. Create a website for my brand.

  2. Create and source content for the website.

  3. Launch the website and improve it.

Make your schedule work for you…

When I am handling a large project, I like to give myself action steps for each day. I don’t want to sit down to work, only to find that I do not know where to start.

For this month’s project, I used Google Documents to create a bullet list of steps I can take each day.

Accountability…

People are faulty. I know that I am, so when I work on a project, I make myself accountable. This month I am working with a partner who meets with me each week to discuss my progress. He introduced me to a tool that I have been using throughout the rest of the week, as well.

Monday.com is a online scheduling tool. It is built like a programable to-do list. I use it to manage my weekly tasks according to their deadlines.

Adjustments…

These are some of my standard steps when I handle a project, but I try to be flexible. Every project I take on is different and has it’s own unique mountains to climb and trails to blaze. So, I am careful to make adjustments to my strategy as I get to know my project.
